1st Grade Activities: Week 11

Monday
1. Religion: pray Our Father; read Gospel for the day; read about the saint of the day: St. Willibrord; evening prayers.
2. Reading: read on-line books ( www.starfall.com ).
3. Take learning style assessment.
4. Math: oral equations: addition.
5. Music: sing made-up song about our local hospital and doctor's office as we pass it.
6. Science/Nature: watch Pumpkin Circle: The Story of a Garden (video); observe and draw ants.
7. P.E.: ballet class.
8. Art: color ballerinas, cut out, play with them.
9. Computer: capture art to print, color, and cut out.
10. Read Aloud: Squanto's Journey: The Story of the First Thanksgiving; The Amazing Bone.

Tuesday
1. Religion: pray Our Father; read saint of the day: St. Godfrey; what is an abbot?
2. Language Arts: use secret code chart where letters equal numbers.
3. Music: sing made-up song: go to sleep.
4. Art: print, color, cut out 2 ballerinas to play with; draw more ballerinas posed on stage and associated items.
5. Math: two oral and written addition problems: 4+4, 5+5.
6. Reading: most of Go, Dog. Go!; Worm Builds, Pizza, Piggy's Bedtime, Catch, Cat Bath, Play Ball, The Big Fish, Piggy's Bath, Worm Is Hot (booklets); Bunnies.
7. Assisted Reading: One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish; A Bird Flies By (booklet).
8. Read Aloud: finish Prince Caspian.
9. Phonics: ph = f; kn = n.

Wednesday
1. Reading: books on line (Starfall); signs, circulars, labels; words in read-aloud books; read the chapter title: "Further Up and Further In" (The Last Battle).
2. Read Aloud: Mouse TV, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; You're Somebody Special Walliwigs; What's Cooking, Jenny Archer? Some poems from Ladybug magazine; Bambi and the Butterfly; Time for Bed.
3. Religion: pray Our Father; read about saint of the day: St. Theodore Tiro; read Gospel of the day: Jn 2:13-22; evening prayers.
4. Drama: play storekeeper; find buried treasure.
5. Science/Nature: "Mom, are the ants (in the kitchen) storing up food for the Fall and Winter?, Then they will come out again in July?"
6. Politics: "Is it true that 100 people could say yes and the president could say no?" She was concerned about our local Prop. G (sports teams selling fireworks to raise money) getting vetoed by the president. ;)
7. Computer: compose email with fancy font.
8. Art: draw a map to find buried treasure at a local park.
9: Math: counting (approx. 60); calculate dots on a foot rest: 2 rows x 12 dots + 1 row x 13 dots + 1 row x 14 dots + 7 rows x 16 dots = 163.
10. Music: sing made-up songs.
11. Recess: 4-H meeting.

Thursday
1. Music: play and sing Raffi, Woody Guthrie songs, and hymns for children.
2. History: a century is 100 years.
3. Religion: pray Our Father; read about St. Leo the Great, St. Peter, St. Paul; read Gospel of the day: Lk 17:20-25.
4. Science/Nature: read about monkeys: Monkeys of Central and South America; discuss local squirrel behavior.
5. Art: draw pictures of a cotton-top tamarin family of monkeys; cut out and play with them.
6. Math: American monkeys have 36 teeth: how many do you have? 12 top teeth + 10 bottom teeth = 22 teeth total (show how to add vertical columns of units and tens); 3-1 = 2; 2-1 = 1; 1-1 = 0; count ants.
7. Reading: Muff and Ruff (Bob Books); Maisy's Bedtime.
8. Read Aloud: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.

Friday, Veteran's Day (school holiday)
[I suppose a school holiday only means that I don't have to document all the learning going on around here. :) ]

Weekend
1. Reading: Silly Old Possum; Who's Coming for a Ride?; When I play; Houses; Lost; Too Many Clothes (booklets); Winnie the Pooh's Opposites.
2. Read Aloud: Please Bury Me in the Library :( Rhinos Who Play Baseball; Rhinos Who Play Soccer; Henry's First-Moon Birthday (Chinese tradition); Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey (mention and drawings of the Sept. 11, 2001 destruction of the Twin Towers incl.).
3. Religion: Mass readings; Mass attendance; pray Our Father; evening prayers.
4.P.E.: soccer game; play at park.
5. Math: oral equations, simple addition.
