1st Grade Activities: Week 9
Monday
1. Phonics: Reader Rabbit programs: alphabetical order; opposites; short vowel sounds; compound words; word chunks; homonyms; ow sound in slow vs. ow in how; or sound; ar sound; ur sound.
2. Reading: size words; color words; Jack and Jill rhyme; opposite words; 5 senses (sentences); school words; signs and labels; Reader Rabbit (Complete Learn to Read System) Storybook 1 and half of 2.
3. Handwriting: some lowercase work in workbook: Vocabulary Development.
4. Religion: pray Our Father, Hail Mary; read Gospel of the day.
5. History: Ancient Egypt video.
6. Math: counting; "I have 10 fingers + 10 toes. 10+10 = 20."
7. Art: photograph fish reading a book.
8. Spanish: Lyric Language Spanish video; study Spanish subtitles while watching a DVD in English.
9. Science: observation wet/dry -- some parts of a wet garment dry faster than others; rescue an ant from being "kidnapped" by a spider.
10. Read Aloud: Prince Caspian.
Tuesday
1. Phonics: final y sound (long i): shy, sty; long i sound: i-e, ie; ing sound; ow sound as in row, bow; oa sound; Reader Rabbit programs (see Monday).
2. Reading: assisted reading: The Big Barn Surprise; Apple; In a People House.
3. Math: make a cube (measure, draw lines, cut, tape) of 1" squares from a 3x5" card for dice for a board game; How many sides to a cube?: "Six".
4. Science: Astronomy video; How a Car Is Built (video); Shamu and You (video).
5. Art: make up components of a board game.
6. Read Aloud: Prince Caspian; Minnie and Moo and the Thanksgiving Tree.
Wednesday
1. Science/Nature: nature walk in the rain: puddles, leaves, snails, slippery steps; bring in a baby snail; observe, play with it, set up environment with leaves for food, photograph.
2. Science/Technology: How a Car Is Built video; Today's Mighty Trains video (includes train safety).
3. Religion: pray; Bible readings for the day.
4. Reading: Reader Rabbit (Complete), story from book 2, read several stories from book 3.
5. Poetry: short poem about walk in the rain.
6. Music: sing made-up songs about nature walk.
7. Spanish: story time at library.
8. Art: Haloween crafts
9. Read Aloud: Magenta's Visit; The Coming of the Pilgrims, Told from Governor Bradford's Firsthand Account; My First Thanksgiving, Tomie dePaola; Estela's Swap; What Grandmas/Grandpas Do Best; My Buddy (about a boy and his assistance dog); Otto Goes to Bed; Tom and Pippo Read a Story; John's Picture; Pigs Ahoy!; The Puddle.

Thursday
1. Science: "a spider has 8 legs" (verify by counting legs on plastic spider); Watch Kids Discover Bats; narrate information about bats, draw several bats (see page in Science section of binder), video; watch Bill Nye, Outer Splace video.
2. Social Studies: learn about assistance dogs for the handicapped: My Buddy (book).
3. Religion: pray; read and discuss Bible readings for the day.
4. Art: Halloween crafts -- color and paste; make a ghost puppet from a white tissue; make doll clothes from tissues; draw bats.
5. History: "What did Lewis' hat look like? What color was it?" (Lewis and Clark); She wants to dress a paper cat up as Lewis -- internet research.
6. Spanish: watch Spanish language video: Elmo en la Tierra de los Grunones.
7. Handwriting: write alphabet (all caps) on chalkboard; copy title of video, phone number, website in notebook.
8. Reading: Piglets; Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (recognizes color words).
9. Read Aloud: Pigs Ahoy!
10. Music: sing made-up songs; attend choir rehearsal: Ludwig Senfl, Missa Nisi Dominus.
11. Art: draw dogs, girls; knight with armor, elf, tree spirit (girl) and tree, faun with trumpet, Aslan the lion (colored chalk on chalkboard); "Nirnia".
Friday
1. Read Aloud: Little Lulu Ladybug; Christmas Lullaby.
2. Music: sing made-up song about a mouse, and another about soap, "your favorite friend".
3. Art: we drew, colored, cut out mice from book: Christmas Lullaby; draw paper toys for the mice.
4. Drama: drama with paper mice.
5. Math: solve addition equations: 3+1, 2+3, 3+3, 4+0, 4+1, 2+4, 3+4, 4+4, 0+5, 1+5, 5+2, 5+3, 4+5, 5+5, 0+6, 1+6, 6+6, 6+5, 4+6, 3+6, 6+2, 7+0, 7+1, 7+2 (oral, with flashcards); 10 tens are 100 (look at manipulatives).
6. Phonics: long "e" sound in ee (seed) ea (bead).
7. Reading: Reader Rabbit, books 39, 40; Marcos Counts (English/Splanish 1-10).
8. Science/Technology: watch Road Construction Ahead video.
